The Argentina international has not played in Argentine football for more than a decade, since leaving San Lorenzo in 2014 to begin his European journey with Atlético de Madrid. Four years after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Correa could return home to become one of the biggest stars in the Argentine Primera División and help River’s ambitions in the 2026 Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16.

River Plate will face the winner of the playoff series between Venezuela’s Caracas FC and Independiente Santa Fe in the Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16. The first and second legs are scheduled for August 12 and 19, as the Argentine giants continue their continental campaign.

River Plate Betting Big on a World Cup Champion

River sees Correa as a top-level addition to strengthen its attack, reportedly submitting an offer close to $15 million, while Tigres maintains a firm stance and is demanding more than $18 million to activate his release clause, according to ESPN.

The 31-year-old forward joined Tigres after a successful spell at Atlético de Madrid, spending two seasons in Liga MX and recording 23 goals and 14 assists in 54 appearances — numbers that renewed River’s interest.

Correa’s Expected Return Home

Correa’s desire to return to Argentina could be a key factor in the negotiations. The striker is looking to be closer to home after an international career filled with major achievements, including the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, LaLiga, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup titles with Atlético de Madrid.

Although he was unable to win silverware with Tigres despite reaching a Liga MX final, a potential move to River Plate would represent a special homecoming, giving Correa the opportunity to return as an established star and become a leader in a team searching for new idols.

The transfer saga has also included controversy, with tensions between Argentine and Mexican clubs, Correa’s early return to Buenos Aires before the deal was finalized, and reports that the player decided to leave Mexico after alleged threats against him and his family on social media.
