Vasco da Gama Supporters Cause Damage at Maracanã

Vasco da Gama's elimination from the 2026 Copa Sudamericana semifinals had consequences beyond the soccer field.

Following the 3-1 defeat to Boca Juniors, a group of supporters of the Brazilian club reportedly vandalized the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

According to information published by Coluna do Fla and reported by OneFootball, images shared after the match showed broken seats, damaged bathroom facilities, and stickers placed throughout different areas of the stadium.

Some of these messages were directed at Flamengo and Fluminense, two clubs that regularly use the venue, and emphasized Vasco's historical connection to the Maracanã dating back to 1950.

At the time of the report, neither the stadium's management nor Vasco da Gama had publicly released an assessment of the damage.

Boca Juniors' Comeback Sparks Frustration

Tensions followed the elimination of Pedro Emanuel's team, which had secured a 1-0 victory at La Bombonera in the first leg.

However, Boca Juniors turned the semifinal around with an impressive performance on Brazilian soil.

Lautaro Di Lollo opened the scoring in the early minutes, while Miguel Merentiel doubled the advantage before halftime.

In the second half, Puma Rodríguez restored hope for the home supporters by scoring the goal that leveled the aggregate score.

Just when the semifinal appeared headed for a penalty shootout, Leandro Paredes produced a shot from outside the penalty area that found the net following an unfortunate intervention by Léo Jardim.

The result confirmed Boca's qualification for the final and ended the Brazilian club's continental ambitions.

Maracanã Faces Concerns Ahead of Flamengo's Match

The incidents have also raised concerns ahead of the stadium's next international fixture.

On Thursday, October 22, Flamengo are scheduled to host Estudiantes de La Plata in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals.

According to the report, CONMEBOL will inspect the venue on Wednesday, October 21, to assess its condition.

The situation follows a legal dispute over stadium access and the amount of time required for the playing surface to recover between events.
