Uruguayan Football Remains Suspended Amid Violence Concerns

Professional football in Uruguay remains suspended after violent incidents during a second-division match, with government officials, the national federation and the players' union working toward a solution.

Uruguayan football remains on hold after the Uruguayan Professional Footballers' Union decided to suspend all competitions following violent incidents that occurred after a Second Division match last weekend.

Government officials, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and the players' union continue to hold meetings in an effort to find a solution that will allow domestic competitions to resume under safer conditions.

Interior Minister Carlos Negro reaffirmed the government's commitment to working alongside football authorities to eliminate violence at sporting events. Meanwhile, union representatives have expressed optimism that ongoing talks will lead to an agreement in the near future.

The crisis began after the Second Division match between Rentistas and Cerrito, when clashes broke out outside the stadium after the final whistle. Rentistas later announced it would file criminal and administrative complaints, alleging that police officers physically assaulted player Jean Martínez during the security operation, leaving him injured.

In response, the players' union suspended all football activities, forcing the postponement of the final round of the Torneo Intermedio as well as remaining Second Division fixtures.

Despite the domestic shutdown, Uruguayan clubs continue to fulfill their international commitments. Nacional, for instance, played Argentina's Tigre in the Copa Sudamericana this week while officials continue negotiations aimed at safely restarting the country's football competitions.
