Universidad de Chile Thrash Guaraní 5-0 and Take a Big Step Toward Sudamericana Round of 16
Universidad de Chile crushed Guaraní with a dominant 5-0 win in the first leg of the 2025 Copa Sudamericana playoffs. The match, played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, clearly showed the gap in quality between the two sides and puts the Chilean club in a commanding position heading into the return leg.
The scoring began with Charles Aránguiz converting a first-half penalty, and from then on, it was all about the home side. In the second half, Javier Altamirano, Lucas Assadi, Fabián Hormazábal, and Nicolás Guerra added to the tally, sealing a resounding victory. Guaraní had no answers on either end of the pitch and looked overwhelmed throughout.
La U dominated possession and dictated the game with intensity, structure, and high pressing that completely dismantled the Paraguayan defense. Coach Gustavo Álvarez executed a flawless tactical plan, and his players responded with precision and ruthlessness in front of goal.
With this result, the Chilean side will head to Asunción with a massive advantage for the second leg. Guaraní, on the other hand, will need a miracle to overturn the deficit and keep their Sudamericana hopes alive.
