Universidad de Chile Advance to Semifinals, Set to Face Lanús
Goals from Lucas Assadi in the 5th minute and Javier Altamirano in the 51st propelled Universidad de Chile into the Copa Sudamericana semifinals on Thursday, as they secured a 2-1 victory over Alianza Lima at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium in Coquimbo.
The series, which was deadlocked after last week’s 0-0 draw in Lima, was decided in Chile, sending La U into a semifinal clash with Lanús.
Assadi, 21, and Altamirano, 26, are part of the new generation being promoted by Argentine coach Gustavo Álvarez, and their performances proved decisive against the approach of compatriot Néstor Gorosito, who managed the Peruvian side. Erick Castillo pulled one back for Alianza Lima in the 64th minute, but it wasn’t enough.
In the semifinals, Universidad de Chile will host Lanús on October 22, with the decisive return leg scheduled for October 29 at the Néstor Díaz Pérez Stadium.
