Santa Fe Take Command Against Caracas and Move Closer to the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16
Goals from Hugo Rodallega and Franco Fagúndez gave Independiente Santa Fe a 2-0 victory over Caracas FC in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. The Colombian side will head to Venezuela with a valuable advantage as they chase a place in the Round of 16.
Independiente Santa Fe took a major step toward the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 after defeating Caracas FC 2-0 in the first leg of the playoff round. Coached by Pablo Repetto, the Colombian club made the most of its home advantage at El Campín Stadium and built a cushion it will look to protect in next week's return leg.
From the opening whistle, Santa Fe controlled the tempo and consistently threatened the goal defended by Frankarlos Benítez, creating most of their danger from set pieces. Although Caracas FC produced a few attacking moments of their own, the hosts dictated much of the match through the efforts of Omar Fernández, Jeison Angulo, and Hugo Rodallega.
Rodallega Delivers When It Matters Most
The home side's persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Nahuel Bustos found Hugo Rodallega, who unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box to beat Benítez and give Santa Fe the lead with a spectacular finish.
Before halftime, the Bogotá club came close to doubling its advantage, while Caracas FC nearly responded through a header from Sebastián González, which drifted wide and kept the score at 1-0 heading into the break.
Franco Fagúndez Seals the Victory
The Venezuelan side pushed forward after halftime and enjoyed its best spell of the match. Robert Hernández and Michael Covea tested the home defense, but Santa Fe regained control thanks to tactical adjustments from Pablo Repetto.
The introductions of Maximiliano Lovera and Jhojan Torres helped the Colombian club reestablish its dominance. Hugo Rodallega missed a clear opportunity after a cross from Helibelton Palacios, while Jáder Obrian also came close with a shot that narrowly missed the target.
The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute. Just seconds after coming onto the field, Franco Fagúndez met a cross from Christian Mafla with a first-time finish to score Santa Fe's second goal and complete the 2-0 victory.
With the result, Independiente Santa Fe will travel to Venezuela carrying a two-goal advantage into the second leg on July 30. The winner of the series will advance to the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, where River Plate of Argentina awaits.
