LIVE! Cienciano vs. Montevideo City Torque in the Copa Sudamericana on beIN SPORTS
The 2026 Copa Sudamericana enters its decisive stage, and this Thursday brings us a matchup between two of the tournament’s biggest surprises. Cienciano hosts Montevideo City Torque at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco in the first leg of the quarterfinals.
The Peruvian side will once again look to take advantage of the altitude and its strength at home to build a lead before traveling to Uruguay, while Marcelo Méndez’s team will try to continue making history in the best international campaign in club history.
Cienciano Wants to Make the Altitude of Cusco Count Again
It has been 23 years since Cienciano last reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana. That journey ended in the best possible way: the Peruvian side won the 2003 edition and became the first and, to this day, only club from Peru to win an official CONMEBOL international competition.
Now, El Papá is dreaming again.
The team coached by Horacio Melgarejo arrives after producing one of the most impressive performances of the Round of 16. Cienciano crushed Botafogo 6-1 at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, with a hat trick from Matías Succar, a brace from Neri Bandiera, and another goal from Marcos Martinich.
Although it lost the second leg 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro, the huge advantage built in Cusco allowed Cienciano to advance with a commanding 6-2 aggregate victory.
Montevideo City Torque Is Making History
On the other side is a Montevideo City Torque team enjoying the best international campaign in its history.
The Uruguayan club is only making its second appearance in the Copa Sudamericana and had never previously reached the quarterfinals of a CONMEBOL competition.
Montevideo City Torque arrives after eliminating Tigre in convincing fashion. It won 1-0 in Argentina before securing a 2-1 victory in Montevideo to close out the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
One of its biggest threats will be Salomón Rodríguez, who has scored five goals in the competition and enters the matchup as one of the most dangerous forwards in this edition.
In addition, Marcelo Méndez’s side has won seven of its nine matches in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana, proving that it can also compete and get results away from Uruguay.
It All Begins in Cusco
The first leg will be played this Thursday, September 10, at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, located more than 3,300 meters above sea level.
Cienciano will try to turn the altitude of Cusco into its biggest ally once again, while Montevideo City Torque will look to keep the tie alive before the decisive second leg in Montevideo.
The winner of this series will advance to the semifinals of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana, where it will face the winner of the matchup between Santos and Atlético Mineiro.
