Two of South America's most historic clubs meet in a series that promises plenty of excitement. Bolívar will look to capitalize on the altitude of La Paz before traveling to Porto Alegre for the second leg. Bolívar Aims to Make History Once Again

Bolívar's memorable run to the 2004 Copa Sudamericana final remains one of the greatest achievements in Bolivian club football. The club became the first—and still the only—Bolivian team to reach the tournament's final, and now the country's most successful club hopes to write another historic chapter.

The challenge will be significant. Standing in its way is an experienced Grêmio side, a club Bolívar has faced four times in official CONMEBOL competitions. The Brazilian club holds the advantage in the head-to-head record, with Bolívar earning just one victory in those previous meetings.

The Bolivian champions arrive from the 2026 Copa Libertadores, where they managed only one victory during the group stage. However, that win came against Fluminense at the Estadio Hernando Siles, once again proving how difficult it can be for Brazilian clubs to play at high altitude in La Paz.

Located more than 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) above sea level, the Hernando Siles has long been one of South America's toughest venues for visiting teams. Bolívar will look to use that advantage to build a lead before the decisive second leg in Porto Alegre next week.

Grêmio Looks to Continue Its Strong Campaign

On the other side is a Grêmio squad that has shown consistency throughout this edition of the Copa Sudamericana. The Brazilian club finished second in its group after suffering only one defeat during the group stage.

That lone loss came in its opening away match against Montevideo City Torque, falling 1-0. From that point forward, Grêmio responded with a series of positive results that secured its place in the Playoffs.

Although Grêmio is one of South America's most decorated clubs, the Copa Sudamericana remains one of the few major continental trophies missing from its collection. With an experienced squad accustomed to high-pressure knockout matches, the Brazilian side will aim to leave La Paz with a favorable result before hosting the decisive second leg at home.
