Jovane Cabral goes from making his mark with Cape Verde at the World Cup to playing the Sudamericana with Grêmio

Grêmio, one of Brazil's most traditional clubs, announced the signing of Cape Verde forward Jovane Cabral on Thursday following his participation in the 2026 World Cup in North America.
“From the World Cup to Porto Alegre. Jovane Cabral is the first Cape Verdean player to wear our shirt,” the club said on social media while announcing its newest signing.
Jovane Cabral signs with Grêmio through 2027
The 28-year-old forward signed a contract with the Tricolor Gaucho for the remainder of the current season and the next one, keeping him at the club through the end of 2027.
Cabral was part of Cape Verde's surprising and determined squad at the 2026 World Cup and started against both of the tournament's finalists.
He faced Spain in the group stage and later played against Argentina in the Round of 32.
Jovane Cabral's career in Europe
Cabral began his professional career in the youth ranks of Sporting CP, gradually working his way up before making his first-team debut in 2017.
During his time with the Portuguese club, he won the Primeira Liga, the Portuguese Cup, three Portuguese League Cups, and the Portuguese Super Cup.
He later went out on loan to Italian clubs Lazio and Salernitana, as well as Olympiacos in Greece.
In 2024, he returned to Portugal to join Estrela da Amadora, where he spent the past two seasons.
Jovane Cabral will play in the Copa Sudamericana with Grêmio
Cabral now joins a Grêmio side that has won the Copa Libertadores three times, although the Brazilian club is currently going through a difficult period.
The team is battling to avoid relegation from the Brazilian top flight but remains alive in two other competitions.
In the Copa do Brasil, Grêmio will face Mirassol for a place in the quarterfinals, while in the Copa Sudamericana it will play Bolívar in a playoff for a spot in the Round of 16.
