Independiente, currently at the bottom of the Argentine football table, hosts Universidad de Chile this Wednesday in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana 2025 round of 16. The "Rojo" needs a victory at the Estadio Libertadores de América to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Santiago and end a streak of seven matches without a win.
The match will kick off at 9:30 PM local time (00:30 GMT), with the pressure of the fans and the future of manager Julio Vaccari hanging in the balance. A loss would eliminate Independiente and plunge the club into a full-blown crisis.
First Leg Recap
On August 13, Universidad de Chile secured a 1-0 victory at the Estadio Nacional, thanks to a goal by Lucas Assadi in the 36th minute. Independiente showed fight with clear chances from Santiago Montiel and Felipe Loyola, but the expulsion of Matías Abaldo hampered their efforts in the final stages.
Independiente’s Struggles at Home
In the Argentine Torneo Clausura, the "Rojo" fell 2-1 to Vélez Sarsfield with a makeshift lineup, a result that left them at the bottom of Zone B with just two points from five matches.
Universidad de Chile Confident Despite League Loss
Universidad de Chile comes off a 3-1 loss to Audax Italiano in the Chilean Primera División but remains in second place, nine points behind Coquimbo Unido. Coach Gustavo Álvarez fielded nearly the same lineup that defeated Independiente in the first leg, and midfielder Matías Sepúlveda stated:
“We’re very confident; we have a strong squad. We’re going all out on Wednesday.”
International History
The last time these teams met was in the 1998 Copa Mercosur: Independiente thrashed Universidad de Chile 6-2 in Avellaneda, but the "U" won 3-0 in Santiago.
Next Round
The winner of this tie will face the victor of Alianza Lima vs Universidad Católica of Ecuador, with the Peruvians holding a 2-0 advantage after the first leg.
