While their more illustrious rivals from the Buenos Aires region, River Plate and Boca Juniors, have long since departed South America’s two flagship club competitions this season, it is the more modest Lanús that is currently flying the flag for Argentina. 

The team that is currently third in the Argentinean league is on the brink of a third appearance in a Copa Sudamericana final, after winning the tournament in 2013 and being runners up in 2020. 

 Thursday night sees Lanús trying to make it a third appearance during a semifinal second-leg clash against Universidad de Chile. Lanús hold a narrow advantage from the first match having grabbed a 2-2 draw on the road. However, the result could have been even better with the visitors racing into a 2-0 lead in the first half before being eventually pegged back by the Chileans. Universidad de Chile is looking for its first appearance in the final since winning the tournament in 2011. 

The winners of this leg will be facing a tough test against Atletico Mineiro in the final on November 22nd.
