Independiente, currently last in the Argentine football table, hosts Universidad de Chile this Wednesday, August 20, in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana 2025 round of 16. The Avellaneda team must win at the Estadio Libertadores de América to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Santiago and end a streak of seven consecutive matches without a victory.

The match will kick off in Avellaneda, where the “Rojo” fans are hoping for a win to keep their dreams alive in South America’s second-most prestigious continental tournament. An elimination would heap even more pressure on manager Julio Vaccari.
In the first leg, played on August 13 at Chile’s Estadio Nacional, a goal by Lucas Assadi in the 36th minute gave Universidad de Chile the advantage. Despite their struggles, Independiente created clear chances through Santiago Montiel and Felipe Loyola, but the expulsion of Uruguayan Matías Abaldo hindered their efforts in the closing stages.
Locally, Independiente is coming off a 2-1 loss to Vélez Sarsfield in the Liga Profesional Argentina, a result that left them at the bottom of Zone B with just two points from five matches.
Meanwhile, Universidad de Chile arrives after a 1-3 defeat to Audax Italiano in Chile’s Primera División, where they sit second, nine points behind leaders Coquimbo Unido. Their coach, Gustavo Álvarez, fielded nearly the same lineup that defeated the Argentines in the first leg.
One of the Chilean team’s key figures, Matías Sepúlveda, stated ahead of the match: “We’re very confident, we have a strong squad, and we’re going all out this Wednesday.”
Historically, the last time these teams met in an international competition was in the 1998 Copa Mercosur, with Independiente thrashing Universidad de Chile 6-2 in Avellaneda and the “U” winning 3-0 in Santiago.
The winner of this tie will face the victor of Alianza Lima vs Universidad Católica of Ecuador in the quarterfinals, with the Peruvians holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
