Footballer Who Played in Copa Sudamericana Days Ago With Mushuc Runa Dies
Ecuadorian football mourns the tragic death of Marcos Olmedo, a Mushuc Runa player, who passed away in a car accident in Esmeraldas.
Tragedy Strikes Ecuadorian Football
Ecuadorian football is in mourning after the passing of Marcos Olmedo, a 26-year-old midfielder from Mushuc Runa, who died on Sunday in a traffic accident in the province of Esmeraldas, located on the northern border with Colombia.
“With deep sorrow, we regret to announce the passing of our beloved player Marcos Olmedo. Our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones in this moment of grief. Rest in peace, Marcos,” posted Mushuc Runa on their official X account.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) also expressed condolences, noting that Olmedo had previously worn the shirts of Aucas, América de Quito, Macará, Liga de Quito, and El Nacional, the latter with whom he lifted the 2024 Copa Ecuador. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, teammates, and everyone who is part of Mushuc Runa, as well as the entire football community of the country,” added the federation.
A Player Who Left His Mark
According to reports from ECU-911, the accident occurred in the town of Quinindé, where two vehicles collided, resulting in the deaths of Olmedo and two other men aged between 30 and 34.
After winning the 2024 Copa Ecuador with El Nacional, the midfielder joined Mushuc Runa this year, becoming part of the squad that recently shined in the Copa Sudamericana group stage, where they finished as the best team overall.
Miguel Ángel Loor, president of the LigaPro, also expressed his sorrow: “Such sadness. My condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Marcos Olmedo. Rest in peace.”
Other Ecuadorian clubs such as Barcelona, Independiente del Valle, El Nacional, Aucas, and Liga de Quito also lamented the loss. In a statement, El Nacional honored his memory: “Today we bid farewell with deep sorrow to a warrior who marked our history and brought back glory with a championship star after 18 years of waiting.”
Local police and traffic authorities continue to investigate the causes of the crash. Meanwhile, the Ecuadorian football community pays tribute to a player who still had a bright future ahead.
