CONMEBOL Promises Tough Sanctions After Violence in Independiente vs Universidad de Chile
The Copa Sudamericana is once again at the center of controversy after the round of 16 clash between Independiente de Avellaneda and Universidad de Chile was suspended due to violent incidents at the Estadio Libertadores de América-Ricardo Enrique Bochini. What was expected to be an exciting knockout tie was overshadowed by chaos in the stands, prompting an immediate response from CONMEBOL.
What Did CONMEBOL Say After the Incidents?
In a statement released on Thursday, the South American Football Confederation strongly condemned the violence, pledging to act with “the utmost firmness” and apply the corresponding sanctions under the Disciplinary Commission’s regulations. The organization also confirmed that it remains in constant contact with local security authorities while gathering all necessary evidence to submit to its Disciplinary Unit.
What Happened During the Match?
The game was suspended in the 48th minute with the score level at 1-1 (aggregate 2-1 in favor of Universidad de Chile). Trouble began when away supporters, located in the Bochini Alta stand, threw seats and chunks of concrete toward the home fans.
Moments later, a group of Independiente supporters managed to invade the visiting section, sparking violent confrontations. The situation forced Uruguayan referee Gustavo Tejera to halt the match.
Before the suspension, Lucas Assadi (11’) had given Universidad de Chile the lead, while Santiago Montiel (27’) equalized for Independiente.

Injuries and Arrests Reported
According to the police report, 111 people were arrested, most of them Chilean nationals, along with one Argentine and another individual whose nationality was not specified. The report also confirmed 22 injured, including two in serious condition who required surgery.
Universidad de Chile later reported that 19 of its supporters were injured, with one in life-threatening condition.
What Measures Will CONMEBOL Take?
The governing body urged all clubs to reinforce security measures to prevent similar situations.
“Incidents like these must not be repeated,” read the statement.
The possibility of rescheduling or canceling the remainder of the match is under review, but CONMEBOL stressed that the immediate priority is the safety of players and supporters.
