Bolivar Crushes Cienciano on Aggregate and Advances to Copa Sudamericana Quarterfinals
With authority and composure, Bolívar defeated Cienciano on aggregate to secure a spot in the Copa Sudamericana Quarterfinals, where they will face another South American powerhouse.
Celeste Dominance in Cusco
Bolívar sealed its qualification on Wednesday at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium, defeating Cienciano 2-0 to confirm the 2-0 victory from La Paz a week earlier, closing the series with a convincing 4-0 aggregate score.
The Bolivian side struck early with a goal from Uruguayan forward Martín Cauteruccio, who converted a penalty in the 14th minute with a precise shot that left goalkeeper Juan Cruz Bolado helpless. The play came after Maximiliano Amondarain fouled Damián Batallini inside the box, giving the visitors their first edge.
Far from sitting back, the Bolivian club kept pressing and doubled the lead before halftime with a right-footed strike from Batallini, silencing the Cusco crowd and practically sealing the series.
Cienciano Couldn’t Break the Celeste Wall
Throughout the match, Cienciano attempted to create chances with set pieces and long-range efforts, but the Bolivian defense held firm. Colombian striker Diego Valoyes came close with a header that went just wide, while goalkeeper Carlos Lampe showed composure, denying every dangerous attempt.
The second half was less intense. With the tie practically decided, the Peruvian side lowered its pace, while Bolívar managed the advantage and looked to counterattack in an organized manner. Lampe was crucial, making at least five key saves to ensure his clean sheet across both legs.
The small group of Bolivian fans present in Cusco celebrated with banners commemorating the club’s centennial, enjoying another historic moment on the international stage. Now, Bolívar will face the winner of the clash between Atlético Mineiro and Godoy Cruz in the Quarterfinals, with hopes of extending their dream run in the Copa Sudamericana.
