Boca Juniors Eliminates O'Higgins on Penalties to Reach the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16
The team coached by Vasco Matos arrived in Chile holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg at La Bombonera, thanks to Miguel Merentiel's goal. However, the Chilean side responded with determination on home soil and leveled the aggregate score to force the tie into penalties.
Boca Controlled the Match, but O'Higgins Never Gave Up
From the opening whistle, O'Higgins came out determined to overturn the deficit. The Chilean club applied high pressure during the opening minutes, hoping to force mistakes from Boca Juniors, while the Argentine side remained patient in possession, waiting to exploit the spaces left behind.
As the match progressed, Boca gradually took control. The visitors repeatedly attacked through the flanks with Tom谩s Aranda and Sebasti谩n Villa, looking to provide service for Miguel Merentiel, who once again served as the team's main attacking reference.
The first clear opportunity came in the 12th minute when a mistake by Leandro Lozano allowed Arnaldo Castillo to fire a left-footed effort that narrowly missed the post guarded by 脕lvaro Montero.
After that chance, the pace of the match slowed considerably. Following the hydration break, both teams struggled to create dangerous opportunities, with possession changing hands frequently but neither side producing meaningful scoring chances.
Although O'Higgins finished the first half with greater attacking intent, Boca Juniors' defense remained composed and preserved both the scoreless draw and its aggregate advantage.
Francisco Gonz谩lez Forced a Penalty Shootout
The second half followed a similar pattern. Boca Juniors controlled the tempo, while O'Higgins gradually took more risks in search of the equalizer.
The first shot on target came from Felipe Ogaz, whose long-range effort was comfortably handled by 脕lvaro Montero.
The Chilean side's best chance arrived in the 65th minute when Miguel Brizuela found himself completely unmarked following a free kick, only to send his header over the crossbar.
Boca responded immediately. Four minutes later, Tom谩s Aranda cut inside the penalty area and unleashed a shot that drifted just wide of Omar Carabal铆's goal.
The breakthrough finally came in the 72nd minute. Francisco Gonz谩lez, playing his final match for O'Higgins before joining Club Tijuana, capitalized on a clearance by Nicol谩s Figal and struck a superb left-footed volley to make it 1-0, leveling the aggregate score.
The closing stages were filled with tension. O'Higgins pushed forward searching for the winning goal, while Boca Juniors looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack.

Penalties Sent Boca Juniors Through
The drama continued well beyond regulation time.
In the 77th minute, Leonel Flores nearly produced a spectacular goal, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar. Shortly afterward, Thiago Vecino squandered an excellent opportunity by failing to connect with a cross inside the penalty area.
At the other end, Omar Carabal铆 delivered two outstanding saves against Tom谩s Aranda, while Ayrton Costa missed a golden chance by sending his shot just wide with the goal at his mercy.
The tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.
For O'Higgins, Francisco Gonz谩lez, Arnaldo Castillo, and Miguel Brizuela converted their penalties, while Thiago Vecino and Luis Pavez failed to score.
For Boca Juniors, Leandro Paredes, Miguel Merentiel, Nicol谩s Figal, and Lautaro Blanco all found the net. The only miss came from Tom谩s Aranda, whose attempted Panenka was brilliantly stopped by Omar Carabal铆.
In the end, Lautaro Blanco stepped up to take the decisive penalty and calmly converted, sealing Boca Juniors' place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, where the Argentine giants will face Deportes Recoleta.
