Racing Eliminates Wanderers in Montevideo Derby to Advance in Copa Sudamericana
A standout performance by goalkeeper Lautaro Amade helped Racing de Uruguay advance to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana after defeating Montevideo Wanderers in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw in regulation. Racing converted all four of their penalties, with Sebasti谩n Sosa, Mart铆n Lima, Agust铆n Pereira, and Alejandro Severo all scoring, while Amade became the hero by saving penalties from Tabar茅 Viudez and Nicol谩s Roy贸n.
Racing Repeats Last Year's Feat
With this result, Racing has replicated the success of last season, when they also reached the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana. In that edition, Escuelita del barrio Sayago eliminated Cerro Largo and had a historic campaign, drawing with Corinthians and defeating Argentinos Juniors in Brazil, though they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Huachipato.
Under the guidance of Cristian Chambian, Montevideo Wanderers put up a strong fight, resisting the pressure from Racing. Wanderers had the clearest chances to win the match but couldn't capitalize on them. Despite this, Racing made the most of their penalty-taking skills and Amade's great performance to secure the win.
Racing's Strong Moment in the Torneo Apertura
With this victory, Racing is enjoying their best run in the Torneo Apertura Uruguayo, having secured their first win against Montevideo City. The team is now preparing for their participation in the Copa Sudamericana group stage. This Thursday, Cerro Largo and Danubio will face off to decide which other Uruguayan team will join Racing in that stage.
