(VIDEO) Goals From Botafogo vs Racing
Thanks to a goal from Danilo and an own goal by Marco Di Cesare, Botafogo defeated Racing and moved one step closer to the Copa Sudamericana knockout stage.
Botafogo continued its impressive run in the Copa Sudamericana with a 2-1 victory over Racing at the Nilton Santos Stadium, a result that not only eliminated the Argentine side from contention but also placed the Brazilian club alone at the top of Group E after four matches.
The Rio de Janeiro side remains unbeaten in the competition and now sits on 10 points, two ahead of Caracas, which has emerged as its main challenger for the group’s direct spot in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Racing remains stuck on four points and is now mathematically eliminated from advancing.
Botafogo Capitalized on Racing’s Mistakes
The match began with Botafogo trying to control possession and push forward early. Although the Brazilian side initially struggled to break down the Argentine defense, it eventually found the opener through an unfortunate moment for the visitors.
In the 18th minute, after a through ball from Medina intended for Junior Santos, defender Marco Di Cesare attempted to clear the ball but instead sent it into his own net, catching goalkeeper Cambeses off guard and giving the home side the lead.

The team coached by Gustavo Costas responded well and looked much stronger after halftime. The equalizer arrived quickly when Adrián Martínez rose inside the area to head home a cross delivered by Rojas, leveling the match early in the second half.
With the momentum shifting, Racing began to create more dangerous opportunities and looked increasingly capable of completing the comeback.
Danilo Sealed the Victory
However, just as the game appeared evenly balanced, Danilo stepped up to make the difference. The midfielder finished off a counterattack led by Junior Santos and Matheus Martins in the 73rd minute, restoring the lead for Botafogo and ultimately securing the victory.
The night also featured a notable presence in the stands, as Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti attended the match to observe several players.
To make matters worse for Racing, goalkeeper Cambeses was sent off in stoppage time after handling the ball outside the box to stop a dangerous chance created by Villalba. With no substitutions remaining, midfielder Miljevic was forced to take over in goal for the final moments.
With the win, Botafogo moved significantly closer to securing qualification, while Racing deepened its ongoing crisis, extending its winless streak to seven matches across all competitions.
