The Argentine side had to work hard against a determined opponent and goalkeeper Lucas Bruera, but a late winner kept them top of the standings with 10 points.
Bruera shines and saves Quintero penalty
River created several opportunities in the first half but were denied repeatedly by Bruera.
The key moment came in the 26th minute when the goalkeeper saved a penalty from Juan Fernando Quintero.
Carabobo managed to stay alive in the match and threatened at times before halftime.

Late drama seals the win
River finally broke through in the 59th minute after a move involving Quintero and Maxi Meza.
Carabobo equalized through Matías Núñez in the 77th minute before the game turned chaotic with red cards for Edson Castillo and River goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán.
That forced defender Matías Viña to play in goal late in the match.
In stoppage time, Maximiliano Salas scored in the 96th minute to secure the victory for River Plate.
