The defending CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana champions, Lanús, earned a hard-fought 2-0 home victory over Peru’s Cienciano on Wednesday in the first leg of the 2026 Playoff Round, meaning the battle for a place in the Round of 16 will be decided next week in Cusco.

Fast Start, but Early Frustration for Lanús

Following their elimination from both the 2026 Copa Argentina and the 2026 CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, Lanús approached its return from the FIFA World Cup 2026 break with determination, looking to defend the title that defined last season.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side controlled the early stages in front of their home fans at Estadio Ciudad de Lanús – Néstor Díaz Pérez, with Carlos Izquierdoz, Agustín Cardozo, and Eduardo Salvio leading the pressure against the Peruvian visitors.

Lanús thought it had taken the lead in the 3rd minute when Lucas Besozzi found the back of the net after Yoshan Valois delivered a cross from the right following a perfectly timed through ball from Cardozo. However, the goal was ruled out for offside against the Colombian winger.

The hosts maintained an aggressive approach throughout the opening half, although that intensity also resulted in yellow cards for Cardozo, Salvio, and Franco Watson.

Watson Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 35th minute.

Besozzi won possession in midfield before combining brilliantly with Franco Watson, who turned inside the penalty area and finished with a left-footed strike into the bottom-right corner beyond goalkeeper Ítalo Espinoza.

Although Cienciano head coach Horacio Melgarejo urged his side to sit deep and attack on the counter, Lanús remained firmly in control and nearly doubled its advantage before halftime through opportunities for Cardozo and Valois.

A Tightly Contested Second Half

Despite limited support in the stands, fans from both clubs created a lively atmosphere throughout the match.

Both teams looked to attack after the break, although clear-cut chances were limited.

Cienciano's best opportunity came in the 52nd minute, when Ecuadorian striker Carlos Garcés forced a dangerous effort that nearly produced the equalizer.

Lanús responded through Ramiro Carrera, Eduardo Salvio, and Yoshan Valois, but none of their attempts found the target.

Besozzi Sent Off After VAR Review

Lanús was reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute after Lucas Besozzi was shown a straight red card. The winger, wearing No. 77, caught Gerson Barreto on the left calf with a heavy challenge in the 59th minute.

After a VAR review, Venezuelan referee Alexis Herrera upgraded the initial decision and sent Besozzi off, leaving the defending CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana champions to finish the match a man down.

Lanús’ Second Goal Seals the Victory

Ramiro Carrera made it 2-0 in the 95th minute of stoppage time after capitalizing on a loose ball following goalkeeper Ítalo Espinoza’s intervention on a cross from the right by Chilean midfielder Matías Sepúlveda.

It was a costly mistake from the Peruvian goalkeeper, leaving Cienciano with a much tougher challenge ahead in the second leg.

Both players entered as substitutes in the second half, but Carrera was rewarded for his persistence and constant search for a goal, delivering a crucial strike for the CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana defending champions.

Everything to Play for in Cusco

Although Lanús takes a one-goal advantage into the return leg, the tie remains wide open.

The decisive second leg will take place on Wednesday, July 29, at Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco, where Cienciano will attempt to overturn the deficit and book its place in the CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.

The winner of the series will face Brazilian side Botafogo in the next round.
