Tragedy in Brazil: Dozens of Flamengo Fans Injured in Bus Crash Ahead of Copa Libertadores Semifinal
What was meant to be a journey of joy turned into tragedy. Nearly 50 Flamengo fans were injured in a bus crash in Brazil on their way to the Copa Libertadores semifinal.
A Journey of Passion That Ended in Tragedy
What should have been a road trip full of excitement has turned into heartbreak. At least 46 Flamengo supporters were injured —four of them critically— after their bus overturned while traveling to Argentina for the Copa Libertadores semifinal against Racing Club.
The crash took place along kilometer 281 of the Presidente Dutra Highway, one of Brazil’s busiest roads linking Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. According to authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle for reasons still under investigation, causing it to overturn and block traffic for almost an hour.
Nearly 50 Injured, Four in Serious Condition
The Federal Highway Police confirmed that 46 passengers were hurt: 32 sustained minor injuries, 10 were seriously injured, and 4 remain in critical condition. Emergency services transported the victims to nearby hospitals in Barra Mansa, where several are still receiving care.
Among those injured are members of Urubuzada and Nação 12, two of Flamengo’s most passionate fan groups. Surveillance footage from the highway is now being analyzed to determine what caused the crash.
Flamengo Plays With Heavy Hearts
Led by Filipe Luis, Flamengo will face Racing Club this Wednesday in Avellaneda for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinal. The Brazilian giants hold a 1–0 advantage from the first leg in Rio, thanks to a late goal by Colombian midfielder Jorge Carrascal.
Despite being one step away from another continental final, the team’s focus is divided between football and the wellbeing of its loyal supporters. Players and staff have expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, hoping to dedicate a potential qualification to them.
In a tournament fueled by passion, Flamengo’s biggest goal this week will be to honor those fans whose love for the club led them on a journey they’ll never forget.
