OFFICIAL: CONMEBOL Cancels Independiente Medellín vs. Flamengo
Independiente Medellín host Flamengo in a crucial Copa Libertadores Group A clash. Medellín need a home win to stay alive, while Flamengo look to strengthen their grip on top spot in one of the round’s biggest matches.
Official cancellation
The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) officially canceled Thursday’s match between Deportivo Independiente Medellín (DIM) and Flamengo in Matchday 4 of Group A in the Copa Libertadores after disturbances broke out in one of the stands at Medellín’s Atanasio Girardot Stadium.
“The match between DIM and Flamengo has been canceled,” Conmebol announced on the Copa Libertadores X account, meaning the three points could likely be awarded to the Brazilian side.

Reasons for the suspension
The match between Deportivo Independiente Medellín (DIM) and Flamengo, for Matchday 4 of Copa Libertadores Group A, was interrupted on Thursday in the fourth minute due to disturbances in one of the stands at Medellín’s Atanasio Girardot Stadium.
Fans of the Colombian club, protesting the team’s poor form after being eliminated from the local league last Sunday, launched pyrotechnics from the north stand, causing heavy smoke that reduced visibility on the pitch; they also threw objects and attempted to invade the field.
As a result, match referee Jesús Valenzuela of Venezuela decided to stop the game and both teams returned to the locker rooms.
So far, neither CONMEBOL nor the clubs have issued a statement regarding the incident.
Independiente Medellín host Flamengo this Thursday, May 7, at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellín, Colombia, for Matchday 4 of the Copa Libertadores 2026 Group A. The broadcast begins at 8:20 PM ET / 5:20 PM PT, and the match will be shown LIVE on beIN SPORTS.
The “Poderoso de la Montaña” face a crucial match for their hopes of advancing from Group A. The Colombian side enters the round sitting third with four points, behind Flamengo and Estudiantes de La Plata, meaning they must take advantage of their home fixtures before closing the group stage with two away matches.
Medellín come into this clash boosted by a valuable 1-0 Libertadores victory over Cusco FC, a result that helped restore confidence after their recent elimination from Liga BetPlay. The Atanasio Girardot has also become a stronghold for the Colombian side, who will rely on their defensive solidity and home atmosphere to challenge the Brazilian giants.
The team will also look for revenge after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat against Flamengo at the Maracanã earlier in the competition, despite Yony González scoring before halftime.
How Flamengo arrive
Flamengo travel to Medellín as leaders of Group A and one of the favorites to win the Copa Libertadores. The Brazilian giants showed their quality in the reverse fixture, comfortably defeating Medellín thanks to goals from Lucas Paquetá, Bruno Henrique, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, and Pedro.
The “Mengão” arrive after a 1-1 draw away to Estudiantes de La Plata in continental play and a 2-2 draw against Vasco da Gama in Serie A. Although they have not won either of their last two matches, Flamengo continue to display impressive attacking depth and one of the strongest squads in South America.

A crucial clash in Group A
Matchday 4 could play a major role in shaping the future of Group A. For Independiente Medellín, earning points at home is essential if they want to remain in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Flamengo have the opportunity to strengthen their grip on the top spot and move one step closer to qualification with a victory in Colombia.
With contrasting levels of urgency, a heated atmosphere, and significant stakes, this matchup promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the Libertadores round.
