LIVE! Corinthians vs. Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores on beIN SPORTS

  • Neither side has the advantage. After a 1-1 draw in La Plata, Corinthians and Estudiantes arrive at the Neo Química Arena with 90 minutes ahead to decide who will continue the journey toward Eternal Glory.

The Brazilian side will now have the support of its home crowd, but standing in its way is an Estudiantes team accustomed to competing in these types of knockout ties and one that already showed in the first leg that it can cause problems for Fernando Diniz’s side.

Everything Starts Again After the Draw in La Plata

Estudiantes needed just four minutes to take the lead in the first meeting.

Following a cross from Joaquín Tobio Burgos, Guido Carrillo won the aerial duel and forced Hugo Souza into action. The goalkeeper managed to keep out the header, but Alexis Castro reacted first to the rebound and scored to make it 1-0.

Corinthians survived the Argentine side’s strongest spell and found its response after halftime.

Rodrigo Garro set up Kaio César, who finished to make it 1-1 and shift all the pressure to the second leg.

The draw means there is little room for complicated calculations: the winner in São Paulo will advance directly to the semifinals. If the teams are still level after 90 minutes, the tie will be decided on penalties.

The Neo Química Arena, a Fortress for Corinthians

History provides an encouraging statistic for the Timão.

Corinthians has advanced in seven of the previous eight occasions in which it drew away from home in the first leg of a Copa Libertadores knockout tie. The Brazilian side has also won all three quarterfinal second legs it has played at home in the tournament.

Fernando Diniz’s team also has the highest average home possession since the start of the group stage in this year’s competition, at 67%.

But Estudiantes has reasons to believe it can deliver another big result away from home.

The Pincha has lost only one of its last six away matches in the knockout rounds of the Copa Libertadores, keeping four clean sheets during that stretch. In the round of 16 this season, it even defeated Universidad Católica 3-0 away from home.

There is also some recent history between these two teams.

In the quarterfinals of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana, each side won 1-0 at home before Corinthians eventually eliminated Estudiantes on penalties in La Plata. Three years later, they meet again with a place in a continental semifinal at stake.
