Flamengo Thrashes Independiente Medellín and Takes Control of Group A
Flamengo proved why it is one of the top contenders for the title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Independiente Medellín at the Maracaná, securing sole possession of first place in Group A.
Total control from the start
The side led by Leonardo Jardim set the tone early, showcasing a dynamic and efficient attacking display. Lucas Paquetá was the standout in the first half, dictating the tempo and opening the scoring with a composed finish inside the box.
While Flamengo dominated proceedings, a mistake in buildup allowed Independiente Medellín back into the match. Jorge Carrascal lost possession in midfield, leading to a recovery by Alexis Serna, who assisted Yony González to level the score past goalkeeper Agustín Rossi.
Despite the setback, the Brazilian side remained in control. Before halftime, the connection between Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Bruno Henrique paid off once again, as the Uruguayan delivered a precise cross for the forward to restore the lead.
De Arrascaeta leads the rout
In the second half, Flamengo wasted no time extending its advantage. Shortly after the restart, Bruno Henrique returned the favor to De Arrascaeta, who finished clinically to make it 3-1.

With a comfortable lead, the team managed the game with authority, controlling possession and dictating the pace. Independiente Medellín, coached by Alejandro Restrepo, struggled to respond and gradually lost intensity as the match progressed.
The final blow came in stoppage time, when Pedro found the net to seal the 4-1 victory, confirming Flamengo’s dominance throughout the match.
Flamengo emerging as a serious contender
With this result, Flamengo maintains a perfect record and sits alone at the top of Group A, while Independiente Medellín faces a tougher path forward with just one point.
The Brazilian side is not only winning but doing so convincingly. Its attacking firepower and overall balance make it one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
Next, Flamengo will face Estudiantes de La Plata away, in a matchup that could shape the group standings, while Independiente Medellín looks to bounce back against Cusco.
