Flamengo Crowned 2025 Copa Libertadores Champion with Danilo’s Lethal Header
A historic header from Danilo sealed glory for Flamengo, making them the first Brazilian club to win four Copa Libertadores titles.
A New Brazilian King of Cups
Flamengo were crowned champions of the 2025 Copa Libertadores on Saturday after defeating Palmeiras 0–1, becoming the first Brazilian team to reach four titles in South America’s most prestigious club competition.
The decisive moment came in the 67th minute when Danilo rose to connect a soaring corner kick and powered home a header that left Carlos Miguel with no chance in a tense final played at the Estadio Monumental in Lima.
For the Mengão, this marked their fourth Libertadores final in the last six years: winners in 2019 vs River Plate, in 2022 vs Athletico Paranaense, a loss in 2021 vs Palmeiras, and now champions again in 2025.
They had previously won the title in 1981 against Cobreloa of Chile, securing the trophy with two goals from Zico in the tiebreaker held at Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium.
Flamengo Take Control
Both teams came out aggressively, with Palmeiras seeking to unleash the attacking talent of Vítor Roque, while Flamengo gradually asserted themselves with strong midfield organization and a clean build-up led by Guillermo Varela and Jorge Carrascal.
The best chances of the first half fell to Bruno Henrique, who fired over from close range, and Samuel Lino, who was inches away from scoring.
Meanwhile, Palmeiras responded through a dangerous free kick from Raphael Veiga, saved by Agustín Rossi, and a header from Vítor Roque that bounced high over the bar.
Early in the second half came another scare, but ultimately the breakthrough arrived at minute 67 — a corner, a leap, and a thundering header from Danilo, sending the Flamengo supporters into delirium.
Palmeiras Fight Back — But Fla Hold Firm
José Manuel López nearly equalized minutes later with a shot that skimmed past the post. The introduction of Everton signaled Palmeiras’ all-out assault, but Flamengo’s defensive core — Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro, and Danilo — resisted every approach.
A final attempt by Vítor Roque sailed over the crossbar, confirming Flamengo’s triumph and cementing a historic night for Brazilian football.
