Estudiantes Grind Past Cerro Porteño to Reach Libertadores Quarterfinals
It wasn’t pretty, but Estudiantes de La Plata got the job done. The Argentine side advanced to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals after holding Cerro Porteño to a tense 0-0 draw on Wednesday night at home, sealing progression thanks to their narrow 1-0 away win in Asunción last week.
Backed by their fans at the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, Estudiantes focused on protecting their first-leg advantage. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was key, producing several crucial saves in the final minutes, especially against aerial threats and a one-on-one with Alexis Castro. On the other side, Cerro Porteño controlled territory for long spells, but their lack of creativity in the final third cost them dearly.
With the tie secured, Estudiantes now turn their attention to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the all-Brazilian clash between Flamengo and Internacional de Porto Alegre.
For Cerro Porteño, who had advanced as runner-up in Group G behind Palmeiras, elimination brings a frustrating end to their campaign after a spirited but wasteful second leg.
Estudiantes, leaders of Group A in the group stage, continue their quest for continental glory, once again showing that experience and defensive steel can be enough to push through on the biggest stage.
