Edwin Cardona Misses Two Penalties in Goalless Draw Between Atlético Nacional and Sao Paulo
In a tense Copa Libertadores clash, Edwin Cardona squandered two penalties as Atlético Nacional failed to break the deadlock against Sao Paulo in Medellín.
Cardona Goes From Key Figure to Unlucky Protagonist
Atlético Nacional let a valuable home win slip away after a 0-0 draw against Sao Paulo in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores Round of 16. The night was defined by the misfortune of Edwin Cardona, who missed two penalties — in the 12th and 66th minutes — to the disbelief of the fans at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium.
The hosts came out strong, trying to use Marlos Moreno’s pace to break down the Brazilian defense. However, poor finishing and an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Rafael kept the scoreline level. The first penalty, awarded for a handball by Nahuel Ferraresi, went wide of the left post, changing the momentum of the game.
Sao Paulo, while not dominant, took advantage of the shift in energy to find openings, testing David Ospina with efforts from André Silva and Marcos Antonio, though William Tesillo anchored a solid defensive display.
Second Miss Keeps Series Wide Open
In the second half, Atlético Nacional maintained their attacking intent. Cardona came close with a shot that narrowly missed, and Juan Zapata struck the right post. Moments later, Marlos Moreno set up Marino Hinestroza, who hit the woodwork once again.
The second penalty came after Ferraresi fouled Alfredo Morelos, but Cardona was denied this time by Rafael’s quick reaction. Coach Javier Gandolfi made late changes, bringing on Matheus Uribe, but the home side couldn’t find the breakthrough.
The tie will be decided on August 19 at the Morumbí Stadium, where Sao Paulo will look to capitalize on home advantage, while Atlético Nacional will aim to overcome their finishing woes and advance to the quarterfinals.
