Could “Maravilla” Martínez Play for the Argentine National Team? Only Scaloni Knows, and the Battle for Spots Is Intense
Adrián Emmanuel Martínez continues to make a strong case for consideration for the Argentina national team. He may not play in Europe, but the forward has been vital to Gustavo Costas’ team securing the international titles they’ve won so far. His latest achievement? Becoming the outright top scorer in the Copa Libertadores.
Maravilla Can’t Yet Impress Lionel Scaloni
To date, Adrián "Maravilla" Martínez, the Racing Club forward, has not been called up to the Argentina national football team. Despite his outstanding performances at the club, where he was the leading scorer in the 2024 Copa Sudamericana and the 2025 Copa Libertadores, and played a key role in international titles like the 2025 Recopa Sudamericana, he has yet to earn a national team call-up.

Martínez has publicly expressed his desire to represent the Albiceleste, acknowledging the quality of the players currently in the squad and expressing gratitude for the fans who support his inclusion. In an interview with Infobae, he stated: “The national team is the highest bar a player can set, the ultimate goal. Argentina has so many players; they’re the world champions. So I’m calm, enjoying this moment that I don’t know if it’ll come again.”
In the current Copa Libertadores campaign, El Maravilla is the top scorer with seven goals, but that’s not all—he also leads with 33 shot attempts across nine matches. If Lionel Scaloni were looking for a player who consistently threatens the opposition’s goal, Martínez would be the one.
Rodrigo De Paul Talks About "Maravilla" and the National Team
During one of Rodrigo De Paul’s arrivals at Ezeiza to join the national team, he was asked about the possibility of Maravilla being called up and didn’t dodge the question. “I don’t know, the list is made by Leo (Scaloni), but I congratulate Maravilla and so many other Argentine football players who are doing very well,” the former Racing player responded.
When pressed further on whether Adrián Martínez is national team material, the World Cup-winning midfielder reiterated: “He’s doing very well, but you’d have to ask Leo about that.” De Paul’s ongoing connection with Racing could play a significant role in the forward’s potential call-up to the national team.
