Botafogo Strike Early to Edge LDU Quito in Libertadores Clash
Botafogo, reigning Brazilian and Copa Libertadores champions, defeated LDU Quito 1-0 on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro thanks to a lightning-fast goal from Artur just seconds after kickoff, giving them the upper hand in their quarter-final qualification battle.
With this result, the Carioca side will only need a draw in the return leg at altitude in Quito to secure a place in the next round and keep their dream of defending last year’s title alive.
Under Italian coach Davide Ancelotti, Botafogo needed just 14 seconds to break the deadlock, with Artur converting after an assist from Alex Telles. The early strike forced Tiago Nunes’ LDU to abandon their initial game plan and push forward in search of an equaliser.
Botafogo sought to capitalise on the Ecuadorians’ defensive gaps through counter-attacks and quick transitions, but with Artur as their lone forward, they found it difficult to finish their moves.
The visitors nearly levelled through a long-range effort from Cornejo, but goalkeeper John denied him brilliantly. Late in the first half, Villamil came close to scoring, forcing a clearance from Vitinho with John beaten.
The second half started more evenly, with both teams trading attacking spells. LDU controlled possession for stretches, while Botafogo looked for space to strike again.
Struggling to extend the lead, Ancelotti made four attacking substitutions, bringing on Matheus Martins, Nathan Fernandes, and Joaquín Correa, among others. The changes allowed Botafogo to regain control and create several dangerous chances, especially through Martins, Fernandes, and Arthur Cabral, but the visitors held firm to keep the margin to a single goal.
The tie will now be decided in Quito, where Botafogo carry the advantage but must contend with LDU’s home altitude and attacking ambition.
