Flamengo's playmaker, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, suffered a fracture to his left wrist in Monday's friendly, in which Uruguay beat South Korea 4-1, and will have to undergo surgery two weeks before the start of the Copa Libertadores semifinals against Estudiantes.
The need for the surgery was announced by the Brazilian team in a statement and decided based on the results of the imaging tests that the technical staff of the Uruguayan national team sent to Flamengo's doctors
According to the Rio de Janeiro team's doctor, Fernando Sassaki, tests confirmed a fracture in the left wrist that requires surgery.
"The player will return to Brazil, where he will be examined before the procedure and will begin the recovery process," the Brazilian and Copa Libertadores champion stated in its press release.
Flamengo did not say how many weeks De Arrascaeta will need to recover or whether his availability is in doubt for the October 15 match in which the Brazilian team will face Argentina's Estudiantes de La Plata in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals.
The second leg will be played on October 22 in Rio de Janeiro
Arrascaeta was one of the most outstanding players on the Flamengo team that won last year's Copa Libertadores title in the final against Palmeiras, and he has also been shining in the current season. This year, he has already scored four goals and provided one assist in the competition.
The Uruguayan was also the star of his national team in Monday's victory over South Korea, with one goal and one assist.
The midfielder had to be substituted in the 77th minute of the friendly after slipping on the pitch and falling on his left arm, which resulted in the fracture. EFE
