Agustín Rossi, a standout at Flamengo… and future Brazil national team goalkeeper?
The Copa Libertadores is entering its decisive stage, and Flamengo once again presents itself as one of the top contenders. The Carioca giant features several players with a past in Argentine football, and one of them is Agustín Rossi, who has become one of the pillars of the team.
The former Boca Juniors goalkeeper was decisive in the series against Estudiantes de La Plata, with key saves that cemented his status as a standout. His performance not only earned him a contract renewal until 2027, but also placed him at the center of an unexpected international controversy.
Rossi could play at the 2026 World Cup… but not with Argentina
At 30 years old, Rossi is experiencing one of the best moments of his career. In the Albiceleste, the spot between the posts seems secured for Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez, while Lionel Scaloni continues testing alternatives for the position.
However, a surprising possibility has emerged in Brazil: Rossi could become a naturalized Brazilian citizen and be called up by the Seleção. According to journalist Luciana Rubinska on ESPN, “Watch out for Rossi, who was considering becoming a Brazilian citizen, with strong chances of being the goalkeeper for the Brazil National Team.”
Flamengo itself is said to have facilitated the procedures for the goalkeeper to obtain Brazilian citizenship, something that would make him eligible to be called up by Carlo Ancelotti, should the Italian coach consider him.
A record-breaking goalkeeper: on par with Gatti and Abbondanzieri
Now the starting goalkeeper for Flamengo, Rossi continues breaking records. In his most recent appearance in the Brasileirão, he saved a penalty from Yuri Alberto, reaching 29 career penalty saves — a number that puts him alongside legends like Hugo Gatti, Roberto Abbondanzieri, and Cristian Lucchetti.

Now, the Argentine aims to surpass Sergio “Chiquito” Romero (30 penalties saved) and close in on Franco Armani (34) and Ubaldo Fillol (44), two historic icons of Argentine goalkeeping.
Between two jerseys and a World Cup dream
As Flamengo fights to lift the Libertadores once again, Agustín Rossi is enjoying a present that combines sporting glory with life-changing decisions.
With national team-level form and the support of the Brazilian torcida, his future could take a historic turn: from defending Boca Juniors to becoming Brazil’s goalkeeper at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
