Aerolíneas Argentinas Criticizes Behavior of Peñarol Delegation on Flight
Aerolíneas Argentinas publicly criticized the behavior of Peñarol’s delegation during their flight to Buenos Aires ahead of their Copa Libertadores clash against Racing, sparking controversy before the match.
The trip of Peñarol to Buenos Aires for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 against Racing was overshadowed by controversy. The airline that transported the squad, Aerolíneas Argentinas, issued a public statement on social media criticizing the actions of several players during the flight.
According to the report, some footballers became overly rowdy, chanting songs, jumping in the aisles, and even hitting the seats on the plane. On its official X account, the company stated: “Our obsession is the safety of our passengers. Our passion is to give them the best service. We regret these types of attitudes that have nothing to do with sports.” The message, which tagged the Uruguayan club, was accompanied by a video showing part of the squad’s behavior.
A Tense Atmosphere Before the Match
The situation added to an already heated buildup to the game. In the early hours of the morning, Racing fans set off fireworks near the hotel where Peñarol is staying, aiming to disturb the players’ rest.
The Uruguayan side had chosen to stay in a private neighborhood complex in an effort to avoid these disruptions. However, around 3:00 a.m. the first round of fireworks was launched, followed by another at approximately 4:45. Videos shared online showed fans outside the perimeter igniting the fireworks that echoed across the area.
Statements From Peñarol
Jorge Barrera, lawyer and former president of Peñarol, who was also staying at the hotel, spoke about the incident: “It’s part of the Copa folklore. I don’t know how much it affects the players, but the truth is we all woke up. You’d have to ask the squad, but it can also be motivating.”
Meanwhile, the team coached by Diego Aguirre remains focused on Tuesday’s decisive match in Avellaneda, where they will attempt to move on to the next round of the Copa Libertadores against a Racing side looking to capitalize on home advantage and strong fan support.
The controversy with Aerolíneas Argentinas and the hostile reception from the opposing fans have created a tense backdrop for a series that promises high intensity and drama.
