Abel Ferreira and José Mourinho: A relationship built on admiration

Long before becoming the most decorated manager in Palmeiras history, Abel Ferreira had already identified the coach he wanted to learn from: José Mourinho.

His fascination began during his playing career.

Around two decades ago, Ferreira brought three books about Mourinho on his honeymoon with his wife, Ana Xavier. She wondered why he had packed them when he would barely have time to read.

But Ferreira was determined to understand what made Mourinho so successful.

He was particularly intrigued by the Portuguese manager's detailed preparation, his knowledge of opponents and his ability to bring the best out of his players.

In March 2021, shortly after winning his first CONMEBOL Libertadores title with Palmeiras, Ferreira publicly acknowledged Mourinho's influence.

"Our greatest reference is Mourinho. He won everything at clubs of different sizes, playing in different ways. He was the first to achieve great things and open doors," Ferreira said in an interview with Seleção Sportv.

To Ferreira, Mourinho was more than a successful manager. He was the figure who helped Portuguese coaches establish themselves around the world.

The Mourinho philosophy Ferreira brought to Palmeiras

The similarities between the two managers extend well beyond their nationality.

Both value discipline, tactical balance, defensive organization and the ability to adapt to different opponents.

Their teams can defend in compact shapes, limit space and wait for opportunities to exploit an opponent's weaknesses.

Ferreira has also emphasized the importance of mental strength, citing both Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo as examples of Portugal's competitive mentality.

In September 2021, after eliminating Atlético Mineiro to reach another Libertadores final, Ferreira recalled one of Mourinho's defining Champions League moments.

In the 2003/04 round of 16, Mourinho's Porto eliminated Manchester United following a dramatic late equalizer at Old Trafford.

Porto went on to win the Champions League that season.

Ferreira used that example to remind his players of the importance of discipline, hard work and belief.

Two passionate managers who embrace controversy

The resemblance is also clear on the touchline.

Like Mourinho, Ferreira has clashed with journalists, criticized refereeing decisions and delivered statements that sparked debate.

Both managers have used an us-against-the-world mentality to strengthen the bond between their players and supporters.

Ferreira has even read out match statistics during press conferences to defend his team's performances and has received yellow and red cards for his behavior on the sidelines.

"I experience soccer in an intense and passionate way. I'll make an effort to behave better. I like learning, and every day I want to become a better coach," he once admitted.

That intensity has become part of the identity he has built at Palmeiras since arriving in late 2020.

From disciple to inspiration: Mourinho praises Ferreira

Over time, their relationship developed into a friendship built on mutual respect.

In August 2025, Mourinho praised Ferreira's achievements and highlighted something he considered particularly remarkable: his decision to remain at Palmeiras despite winning so many trophies.

"Abel is undoubtedly the great reference among Portuguese coaches," Mourinho told SportyNet.

He praised Ferreira's ability to sustain success while dealing with player departures, developing new talent and continually finding solutions.

The coach who once studied Mourinho's methods had become an inspiration in his own right.

Abel Ferreira targets a third Copa Libertadores title against Estudiantes

At 47, Ferreira has won 11 trophies with Palmeiras, surpassing Oswaldo Brandão's previous club record of ten.

He is also the longest-serving current manager in Brazil's top division, having spent almost six years in charge.

Now, he is preparing for his fourth CONMEBOL Libertadores final, all with Palmeiras.

His first continental triumph came in 2020, when Palmeiras defeated Santos 1-0 at the Maracanã.

A year later, his team beat Flamengo 2-1 at Montevideo's Estadio Centenario to secure a second consecutive Libertadores crown.

This time, Palmeiras face Estudiantes de La Plata, the Argentine club that won three straight Libertadores titles under Osvaldo Zubeldía between 1968 and 1970.

A victory would give Ferreira his third Libertadores title, drawing him level with Zubeldía and leaving him behind only Carlos Bianchi, who won the competition four times as a manager.

The venue adds another layer to the occasion: Ferreira will return to the stadium where he celebrated his second continental triumph.
