Peñarol Survive Scare and Secure Spot in Round of 16
Peñarol overcame adversity and secured early qualification to the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Olimpia on Wednesday in Montevideo, condemning the Paraguayan side to the bottom of Group H.
A stunning long-range goal from Argentine midfielder Eric Remedi in the 73rd minute changed the course of a match that had seemed to favor Olimpia, who led 2-0 by halftime thanks to goals from Lisandro López and Iván Leguizamón.
The tide turned early in the second half when Leonardo Fernández and Maximiliano Olivera pulled Peñarol level.
The win, which pushed "El Carbonero" to 10 points, securing qualification with one match remaining, was sealed by Remedi’s left-footed strike.
Olimpia, meanwhile, remain at the bottom of the group with just 2 points, while the group standings were further settled by Vélez’s 2-0 victory over San Antonio in Argentina.
Thanks to that result, Vélez remain top of Group H, level on 10 points with Peñarol. San Antonio, currently sitting in third place, will now fight for a spot in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.
Olimpia opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a corner kick. Argentine forward Darío Benedetto rose above the defense but saw his header hit the post. The rebound fell perfectly for fellow countryman Lisandro López, who slotted home the 0-1.
In the 37th minute, the Paraguayans doubled their lead. Full-back Facundo Zabala beat his marker and delivered a precise pass to Iván Leguizamón, who sent a powerful left-footed strike past Guillermo De Amores.
Just five minutes after the break, Leo Fernández brought Peñarol back into the game with a left-footed finish across goal.
Before Olimpia could react, the hosts were at it again. In the 55th minute, Fernández delivered a dangerous corner, and captain Maxi Olivera rose to head home the 2-2 equalizer.
With the match now wide open, it was Remedi who struck decisively in the 73rd minute to complete the comeback and send Diego Aguirre’s team into the next round.
The final matchday of Group H will be played on May 28. Peñarol and Vélez will face off to determine top spot, while Olimpia will host San Antonio in Asunción.
Due to disciplinary sanctions, Peñarol will play their final group match without fans at the Campeón del Siglo Stadium.
