Copa Libertadores: How the Round of 16 Will Play Out with River, Racing, Palmeiras, and Peñarol
The Copa Libertadores Round of 16 matchups are set: Palmeiras will take on Universitario, while Racing is set to clash with Peñarol this August.
High-Stakes Matches on the Road to Lima
The 2025 Copa Libertadores Round of 16 draw revealed several exciting fixtures. Palmeiras, the only team to earn a perfect score in the group stage, will go up against Universitario de Perú, in a tie that will test the Brazilian side’s strong form.
Meanwhile, Racing Club, reigning Copa Sudamericana champions, are set to face Peñarol of Uruguay, one of South America’s most storied clubs. The draw took place on Monday in Luque, Paraguay, at CONMEBOL headquarters.
Defending champions Botafogo, who finished second in Group A, will meet Liga de Quito, the 2008 Libertadores winners. The Ecuadorian club topped Group C and will look to spring a surprise against the Brazilians.
All-Brazilian Clash and Southern Giants Collide
The only all-Brazilian tie will be between Flamengo and Internacional. The Rio-based club, three-time champions (1981, 2019, and 2022), will face the Group F leaders in a series packed with star power.
Another standout fixture features River Plate, four-time champions (1986, 1996, 2015, and 2018) and winners of Group B, taking on Libertad of Paraguay, who finished second in Group D. Meanwhile, Vélez Sarsfield will meet Fortaleza, the Brazilian side that advanced from Group E, led by Racing.
All matchups will be played over two legs, from August 12 to August 21. The single-match final is scheduled for Saturday, November 29, in Lima, Peru.
