(VIDEO) Boca Juniors Explodes After Loss to Cruzeiro as Final Clash Erupts in Libertadores
Cruzeiro’s win over Boca ended in chaos: provocations, chases and shoves ignited a heated finish that is already sparking controversy and possible sanctions.
A final whistle that crossed every line in Belo Horizonte
What was supposed to be a high-intensity Copa Libertadores clash turned into an all-out battlefield. Cruzeiro defeated Boca Juniors 1-0, but the result quickly became secondary after a finish filled with provocations, shoves and chases on the Mineirão pitch.
Everything exploded seconds after referee Esteban Ostojich blew the final whistle, when Matheus Pereira celebrated in a provocative manner in front of Leandro Paredes. That gesture lit the fuse. The Argentine midfielder reacted immediately and, within seconds, players from both sides joined in, unleashing chaos that lasted several minutes.
Ayrton Costa, Weigandt and Boca’s fury
Among the most heated figures was Ayrton Costa, who chased Pereira across several meters, visibly furious. Marcelo Weigandt also stood out, even shoving a member of the local staff, while names like Lautaro Blanco and Leandro Brey got fully involved in the scuffle.
The scene said it all: players running, security staff trying to intervene and Cruzeiro players forming a protective circle around their No. 10. The tension had been building throughout the match, with constant clashes and a game played right on the edge.
The refereeing controversy that fueled the fire
Beyond the post-match chaos, much of Boca’s anger stemmed from what happened during the game. The red card shown to Adam Bareiro caused major frustration, as the second yellow card was widely considered excessive.
Referee Ostojich quickly became the center of criticism for his handling of the match. According to post-game reactions, the official had too much protagonism, influencing the flow of the game with questionable decisions.
Leandro Paredes was also outspoken, questioning both bookings that led to the dismissal and stating that “neither was a yellow.” That sense of injustice kept building in a Boca side already playing on the emotional edge.
A heated Boca Juniors, an open group and possible sanctions
Head coach Claudio Úbeda tried to tone things down after the match but made his stance clear: the reaction was a direct consequence of the opponent’s provocation. “It’s logical when a gesture ignites everything,” he explained.
However, the incident won’t just fade away. All signs point to CONMEBOL reviewing footage and the referee’s report, which could lead to disciplinary action against several players involved.
From a sporting perspective, both Boca Juniors and Cruzeiro remain at the top of Group D with six points, but the real impact of this match may go far beyond the standings.
