(VIDEO) All Goals From Crystal Palace vs Liverpool in the Community Shield
With a stellar performance from Dean Henderson, Crystal Palace shocked Liverpool to win the Community Shield in a dramatic penalty shootout.
A Historic Triumph for Palace
At Wembley, Crystal Palace overcame the more than €300 million spent on signings by Liverpool, who debuted their four new additions in this match. Spending just €2 million this summer, Oliver Glasner’s side secured their second title in just a few months, winning 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
The shootout’s standout figure was Dean Henderson, who saved two shots and watched Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott miss their attempts. It was a stark contrast between a Liverpool accustomed to competing for major trophies and a Palace whose only previous silverware was the FA Cup.
In the first half, Liverpool took the lead with a stunning goal from Hugo Ekitiké on his debut, assisted by Florian Wirtz. The equalizer came from Jean-Philippe Mateta, who converted a penalty after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr. Moments later, Jeremie Frimpong shocked everyone with a cross that ended up in the back of the net for 1-2 to the Reds.
Sarr and Henderson Seal the Upset
In the second half, Liverpool had chances to close out the match, but Palace grew in belief. A brilliant save from Alisson Becker on Eberechi Eze couldn’t prevent Adam Wharton from sending Sarr through on goal to make it 2-2 with a powerful strike to the near post 13 minutes from time.
With the score level after 90 minutes, the shootout became Henderson’s stage. The goalkeeper denied Mac Allister and Elliott, and despite misses from Eze and Borna Sosa for Palace, Salah’s early miss proved decisive.
With this result, Crystal Palace lifted the Community Shield for the first time in their history, proving they can deliver shock results even against giants like Liverpool.
