Elton John to Inspire Special Watford Kit
Watford unveiled a special kit inspired by Elton John, honoring the music legend and former club president whose leadership marked one of the most iconic eras in the team’s history.
A tribute to 50 years of history
Watford, currently competing in the Championship, announced that it will wear a commemorative kit inspired by Elton John for this weekend’s match against Blackburn Rovers. The special edition shirt celebrates 50 years since the singer, a lifelong Hornets fan since the age of six, became club president in 1976 and helped transform the team.
The artist himself actively participated in the design, which draws inspiration from the album Diamonds, a collection of his greatest hits from the 1970s. The shirt features several symbolic details: on the back, the phrase “How Wonderful Life is while you’re in the World,” taken from the iconic song Your Song. On the front, it displays the “Happy Hornet” crest, created when Elton John first took charge of the club.
Watford also confirmed that fans will have the option to purchase the jersey either with or without the sponsor logo of a betting company, a move that has been welcomed by supporters who prefer a cleaner look.
Elton John, an eternal Hornets symbol
The relationship between Elton John and Watford goes far beyond fandom. As club president during the 1970s and 1980s, he oversaw a historic rise that took the Hornets from the Fourth Division to the First Division. His passion and commitment left a lasting legacy, to the point where one of the stands at Vicarage Road now bears his name.
This tribute not only highlights his role as a leader but also his cultural and emotional impact on the club and its community. The release of the kit has generated great excitement among fans, who see it as a way to honor and preserve the connection with one of the most influential figures in the club’s history.
With this initiative, Watford seeks to strengthen its identity and remind fans that its story has been written not only on the pitch but also through iconic figures like Elton John, whose influence transcended football itself.
