Championship: Coventry leave it late to go five points clear at the summit
Coventry City looked like they would be held to a stalemate by promotion rivals Stoke City, but Ephron Mason-Clark had other ideas.
Ephron Mason-Clark scored a late winner as Championship leaders Coventry City edged out Stoke City in a top-of-the-table clash at the Bet365 Stadium.
Frank Lampard's side left it late against their Midlands rivals before snatching a dramatic 1-0 victory to move five points clear at the top.
It looked set to be a stalemate in Stoke, where Viktor Johansson twice denied Victor Torp and Carl Rushworth kept out Ben Wilmot.
But, with four minutes remaining, a long throw was flicked on by Ellis Simms, and Mason-Clark acrobatically fired into the top corner for the Sky Blues, who then survived 16 additional minutes to see out victory.
Stoke slipped to third place in the table, after Middlesbrough leapfrogged them with a 2-1 win over Birmingham City at the Riverside Stadium.
The hosts were led by assistant coach Adi Viveash, after it was announced before kick-off they had given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves after compensation between the clubs had been agreed.
First-half goals from Dael Fry and Hayden Hackney, either side of a Demarai Gray strike, were enough to lift Boro back into the automatic promotion spots.
Elsewhere, Hull City climbed back into the play-off places after edging out Portsmouth 3-2.
Joe Gelhardt scored a 79th-minute winner as the Tigers came out on top in a five-goal thriller at the MKM Stadium, while fellow top-six sides Millwall and Preston North End drew 1-1 at The Den.
Charlton Athletic slipped out of the top six as they were beaten by Josh Windass' second-half penalty at Wrexham.
Jordan James' 92nd-minute winner for Leicester City in their 2-1 win against Norwich City also had massive implications, with the Canaries choosing to sack Liam Manning after the match.
Derby County made it five straight wins in the Championship, with Carlton Morris scoring his 10th goal of the season during a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.
Meanwhile, Cameron Burgess scored two own-goals against his former club Ipswich Town, who condemned Swansea City to a commanding 4-1 defeat.
