Has Morocco Already Secured a Spot in the 2026 World Cup? The Latest on the Qualifying Campaign for the Team Even Cristiano Ronaldo Fears
The African national team managed to eliminate Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the last World Cup held in Qatar 2022.
There’s no doubt that Morocco has become the best African football team, surpassing even Egypt, which many still argue holds the title. One only needs to look at their remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign to confirm their dominance. Under coach Walid Regragui, the Atlas Lions not only aim to replicate their historic Qatar 2022 achievements but to surpass them, continuing to establish Morocco football as one of the world’s elite national teams.
Has Morocco already qualified for the 2026 World Cup?
Yes, the talent-packed Moroccan national team, featuring stars like Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat, and Hakim Ziyech, became the first African team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. They secured their spot after a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger in a CAF World Cup qualifying campaign where they remain unbeaten.
“Six matches, six victories. And against teams that play with ten men behind the ball. Qualified for the World Cup!” declared head coach Walid Regragui after clinching their ticket with that dominant performance.
They followed it up with another authoritative result, defeating Zambia 0-2, maintaining their perfect record in the African qualifiers with seven wins, 21 points, 21 goals scored, and just two goals conceded.
This not only highlights their dominance in this World Cup qualifying phase but also serves as a bold statement to the global football stage. The Moroccan Atlas Lions come off a historic fourth-place finish at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where they stunned the world by eliminating powerhouses like Spain (Round of 16) and Portugal (Quarterfinals), despite the latter featuring Cristiano Ronaldo.
Morocco has participated in six FIFA World Cup editions (1970, 1986, 1994, 1998, 2018, and 2022). They made history as the first African nation to advance past the group stage in Mexico 1986 and, years later in Qatar 2022, broke new ground as the first African team to reach the semifinals, cementing their legacy in African football history.
