Yagoub Shines With a Brace as Sudan’s Historic 4-0 Win Eliminates Nigeria From CHAN 2024
In one of the biggest surprises so far at CHAN PAMOJA 2024, Sudan delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over favored Nigeria at the Zanzibar Stadium, knocking them out of the tournament with a game to spare. With this win, the Sudanese side tops Group D, while the Super Eagles remain pointless after two matches.
Sudan dominates and overwhelms Nigeria with discipline and efficiency
The match started with a very active Nigeria, pressing heavily on set pieces and trying to catch the Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja off guard. However, despite some early attempts, the Nigerian side ran into a well-organized defense and a highly effective opponent. In the 25th minute, Abdel Raouf Yagoub opened the scoring with a shot that, after hitting the post, deflected off the unfortunate Leonard Ngenge for an own goal.
Before halftime, Nigeria suffered another blow when Ngenge committed a penalty, converted by Sudan’s captain Walieldin Khdir, making it 2-0 just before the break. Despite some chances for the Super Eagles, the scoreline remained favorable to the Falcons, coached by Kwesi Appiah, who has instilled discipline and character in his team.
In the second half, with Nigeria making attacking substitutions to respond, Sudan grew even more confident and controlled the game. Yagoub then took center stage, scoring two more goals (55’ and 62’), sealing a victory that reflected Sudan’s superiority in all aspects.

The Sudanese team showed great defensive solidity and attacking efficiency, while Nigeria paid dearly for their mistakes and lack of precision, especially suffering on the counterattacks.
Implications and what’s next
With this result, Sudan and Senegal lead the group with four points each, Congo has two, and Nigeria is mathematically out of the tournament. The final group match between Sudan and Senegal will be decisive to determine the top qualifier, while Nigeria will face Congo seeking pride and answers for a team that has shown structural and tactical weaknesses.
Sudan’s performance clearly shows how collective work, organization, and focus can overcome even better-ranked opponents. Nigeria now faces the challenge of analyzing what happened and rebuilding for future competitions.
