Uganda Cranes Triumph 3-0 Over Guinea in TotalEnergies CHAN 2024: Key Victory in Kampala
In a captivating Group C encounter of the 2024 TotalEnergies CHAN at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda Cranes earned a vital 3-0 win against Guinea, reigniting their hopes in the competition. The home side’s success was built on a first-half header by Reagan Mpande, a flawless penalty converted by Allan Okello, and a late goal from Ahimbisiwe, sealing an impressive performance by the co-hosts.
A Tactical Masterclass and Key Moments
Head coach Morley Byekwaso made six strategic changes to his squad before kickoff, including a late decision to start Joel Mutakubwa in goal over Denis Kiggundu. The Uganda Cranes began with high intensity, deploying a traditional 4-4-2 formation that disrupted Guinea’s slick passing game. Despite the home team's energetic start, it was Guinea who created the first dangerous opportunities, with Mutakubwa making crucial saves early on from headers by Cabinet Kouayate and Drame.
As the match progressed, Uganda gradually found their rhythm. A meticulously rehearsed set-piece saw Okello and Joel Sserunjogi link up perfectly, allowing Mpande to break free and score with a powerful header past goalkeeper Camara at the hour mark, putting the hosts ahead 1-0. Buoyed by the lead, Uganda increased the pressure, forcing errors from the visitors' defense, with Okello’s skillful play troubling the Guinean captain Mohamed Bangoura.

The second half maintained the same intensity, marked by the game’s first yellow card to Mukundane Hilary after a foul on Alhassane Bangoura. Okello continued to be the creative force, earning a penalty after drawing a foul from Bashir Bangoura. The referee, after a VAR review, awarded the spot-kick, which Okello calmly converted to double the lead.
In a bid to shift momentum, Guinea’s coach Soulaymane Camara introduced a triple substitution, yet the home side’s defense held firm. A late surge saw Bashir Bangoura narrowly miss a chance to reduce the deficit. In response, Byekwaso brought on Ahimbisiwe for Mpande, who capped the victory with a late goal during added time, igniting wild celebrations at the stadium.
With this win, Uganda Cranes now look ahead to their next match against Niger, while Guinea prepares to face South Africa as the group standings become increasingly competitive. Earlier in the day, South Africa and Algeria shared the points in a 1-1 draw, keeping the race for qualification wide open.
This result marks a crucial step for Uganda, showcasing their determination and tactical discipline as they continue their pursuit of glory on home soil.
