Maema and Kutumela Lift South Africa Past Guinea in Kampala Thriller
South Africa earned a crucial 2-1 win over Guinea in the African Nations Championship, with Neo Maema and Thabiso Kutumela on the scoresheet to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Maema Strikes Early
In a must-win game at Mandela National Stadium, South Africa took control early against Guinea in this Group C clash of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024.
After a 1-1 draw with Algeria in their opener, Bafana Bafana needed three points to stay in contention. In the 10th minute, Thabiso Kutumela combined with Neo Maema, who calmly finished with his left foot into the bottom corner, marking his first goal of the tournament.
South Africa pressed high and forced mistakes from Guinea, but the West Africans found their way back through Moussa Camara, who scored in the 37th minute after a precise pass from Mohamed Bangoura I.
Kutumela Restores the Advantage
The second half saw both teams attack with urgency, but in the 54th minute, Wayde Jooste delivered a pinpoint cross that found Kutumela unmarked. The forward made no mistake, slotting his shot into the bottom right corner for his second career CHAN goal.
Guinea pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with dangerous chances from Mohamed Diabate and Mohamed Bangoura II, but goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu was solid to deny them. A late header from Cheick Camara went just over, sealing the win for South Africa.
Group C Implications
This victory moves South Africa to four points, keeping them in the fight for a knockout spot behind Algeria. Guinea, with just one point, will need a win in their final match and favourable results elsewhere to keep their tournament hopes alive.

The group picture remains open with Uganda and Niger meeting later on Monday.
