Lamlaoui Leads Morocco to Historic Third CHAN Title
With a brilliant brace from Oussama Lamlaoui, Morocco defeated Madagascar 3-2 in the CHAN PAMOJA 2024 final, claiming their third crown and reaffirming their dominance in the tournament.
Morocco take control early
The Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi hosted a thrilling final where Morocco secured their third African Nations Championship (CHAN) crown after overcoming a spirited Madagascar, who reached the final for the first time in their history.
The Atlas Lions struck first thanks to a clinical finish from Lamlaoui, assisted by Youssef Mehri.
Toky Rakotondraibe equalized for Madagascar midway through the first half, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. But Morocco’s experience prevailed again before the break, with Sabir Bougrine restoring the lead.
Lamlaoui’s wonder goal seals the title
The second half delivered the most spectacular moment of the tournament. With Madagascar pushing forward, Lamlaoui unleashed a stunning 40-yard strike that sailed past goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa, underlining his status as the competition’s top scorer with six goals.
Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa pulled one back with 12 minutes left, giving Madagascar hope of a dramatic comeback. However, despite late pressure and several corners in stoppage time, Morocco held firm to clinch their third CHAN crown in six years.
A tale of dominance and inspiration
For Madagascar, it was a heartbreaking but historic end. In only their second appearance, they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final, earning admiration across Africa.
Meanwhile, Morocco confirmed their supremacy, adding this trophy to their 2018 and 2020 triumphs.
As fireworks lit up Nairobi, the Atlas Lions once again stood tall, while Madagascar’s inspiring run proved that fairytales can still be written in African football.
