Kutumela Spoils Algeria’s Run and Keeps South Africa Alive in CHAN 2024
Algeria’s winning streak at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to an end on Friday, after South Africa fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in their Group C clash held in Kampala.
The Fennecs, who had opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Uganda, took the lead thanks to a precise strike from Abdennour Belhocini just before the half-hour mark. However, a lethal finish from Thabiso Kutumela right before halftime earned Molefi Ntseki’s men a valuable point in their tournament opener.
With this result, Algeria now have four points from two matches, while South Africa start their campaign with a positive outcome against one of the tournament’s favorites.
Algeria’s Strong Start
The Algerian side began full of confidence, aiming for back-to-back victories and to preserve their flawless group-stage record in CHAN. Their high pressing paid off early on, when Abderrahmane Meziane forced a fine save from goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu after a cross from Aimen Mahious.
The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute: a loose ball outside the box was seized by Belhocini, who drilled a low, left-footed shot past Xulu, sparking celebrations among the Algerian fans.
Kutumela Changes the Script
Far from giving up, South Africa showed character in their return to the tournament after 11 years. Despite being second-best for most of the first half, they found the equalizer in the 45th minute when a quick combination between Menzi Masuku and Neo Maema left Kutumela in front of goal. The forward made no mistake, finishing with his left foot from the heart of the box.

That goal was a blow to Algeria’s control and gave the Bafana Bafana renewed energy heading into the second half.
A Second Half Without a Winner
After the restart, both teams pushed for victory. Meziane and Mahious came close for the North Africans, while Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Matlhari Makarine tested their luck from distance for the South Africans.
The defense, led by Ramahlwe Mphahlele, kept Algeria at bay, and substitutions on both sides disrupted the game’s rhythm. The match grew scrappy, with yellow cards shown to Kwandakwensizwa Mngonyama and Mehdi Merghem.
The draw leaves Group C wide open, with all four teams still mathematically in contention to advance. Algeria will face Niger in search of a place in the quarterfinals, while South Africa take on Uganda hoping to edge closer to qualification.
