Kenya Edge Zambia to Secure Top Spot in Group A at CHAN 2024
Kenya sealed their dominance in Group A of the CHAN 2024 after a narrow 1-0 win over Zambia, advancing to the quarter-finals alongside Morocco.
Ogam Delivers the Decisive Goal
At a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kenya confirmed their authority with a hard-fought victory against Zambia. The hero was Ryan Ogam, who in the 75th minute controlled a pass from Boniface Muchiri and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Charles Kalumba, igniting the 27,000 fans in Nairobi.
The strike rewarded the Harambee Stars’ persistence, as they had dominated possession but struggled to convert earlier chances. Despite the defeat, Kalumba stood out with key saves that kept the scoreline close.
Kenya’s Rise Under McCarthy
Guided by head coach Benni McCarthy, the team entered the match already qualified but determined to make a statement as title contenders. “When everyone called it the Group of Death, they said we’d probably have zero points. Instead, we’re sitting at the top of the mountain, and now we want to enjoy that view,” McCarthy noted.
With previous wins over Morocco and DR Congo, Kenya had already emerged as one of the tournament’s surprises. Against Zambia, they displayed tactical discipline and resilience, finishing the group stage with 10 points, three victories, and only one goal conceded.
Zambia’s Struggles Persist
For Zambia, the tournament ended in disappointment. Once a continental powerhouse, the Chipolopolo bowed out with four straight defeats. Coach Avram Grant admitted the results were harsh but underlined the value of testing a new generation of players.
Despite attempts from Kampamba and Prince Mumba, Kenyan goalkeeper Faruk Shikhalo responded with crucial saves. Zambia’s lack of finishing touch left them bottom of the group without points.
Group A Outcome
With Kenya’s win and Morocco’s 3-1 victory over DR Congo, the Harambee Stars topped the group with 10 points. Morocco followed with nine, while DR Congo finished third with six, and Angola fourth with four. Zambia ended last with zero.
Kenya will now remain in Nairobi for their quarter-final clash against Madagascar, enjoying both momentum and home support.
