Kompany’s Harsh Halftime Scolding to His Players in the Match Against Mainz
A First Half to Forget
Bayern Munich secured an important away victory in the Bundesliga, but the final score did little to reflect how difficult the match actually was. The Bavarian side went into halftime trailing 3-0 against Mainz, delivering a worrying performance that sparked a strong reaction from Vincent Kompany in the locker room.
The Belgian coach was far from satisfied with his players’ attitude during the first half and chose to call them out in a forceful manner. The team’s response was immediate: a completely different second half allowed Bayern Munich to mount a comeback in a match that seemed lost.
After the game, Leon Goretzka spoke about what happened at halftime and confirmed that the coach was very tough on the squad.
“At halftime, we were reprimanded, and that also makes us stronger,” said the German midfielder. He also emphasized that these kinds of moments help measure the team’s character and ability to respond in adverse situations.
The Reaction and Kompany’s Message
Bayern Munich approached the match with several rotations, as Vincent Kompany decided to rest some starters with the UEFA Champions League semifinal against PSG in mind. However, that apparent relaxation was precisely what upset the coach.
Although the team has already secured the Bundesliga title, Kompany believes there is no room to lower intensity, especially with two major trophies still at stake.
The coach also addressed the episode in a press conference and, true to his style, used an ironic tone to describe what happened.
“There were a lot of compliments at halftime,” he said with a smile, making it clear the talk was anything but calm.
Beyond the irony, Vincent Kompany shared a reflection that captures his coaching philosophy:
“When the score is 3-0 in favor of the opponent, you might think the game is lost. But you have to bring out the anger, not accept it, press until the final minute, and show character. A reaction like that doesn’t come only from tactics, it also comes from emotion.”

And the message worked. Bayern Munich came out with a different attitude in the second half, raised the intensity, pressed high, and quickly found a way to change the course of the match.
Beyond the result, what satisfied Kompany most was the emotional response of his players.
The coach understood that the real problem was not just the scoreline, but the way the team was competing. That’s why he chose to intervene firmly before the match completely slipped away.
Now, Bayern Munich heads into one of the most important matches of the season with positive momentum. Next week, they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals.
Vincent Kompany knows mentality will be key in that tie and did not want to allow an apparently insignificant match to disrupt his team’s competitive rhythm.
