Dayot Upamecano's brilliant solo goal and Serge Gnabry's 100th Bundesliga strike helped Bayern Munich to a 3-1 win at Freiburg, as they returned to the top of the table.
Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich: Upamecano scores stunner as Gnabry brings up Bundesliga century
Bayern Munich moved back above Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, ahead of the rivals' huge Bundesliga meeting next Saturday.
Having been overhauled at the summit by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, as a result of Maximilian Beier's late winner against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern were under the tutelage of assistant coach Aaron Danks, after Vincent Kompany collapsed at training on Friday.
However, Kompany – who was taken to hospital for tests and is in a stable condition – will be able to celebrate three points, with Michael Olise getting Bayern's clinching goal after Tom Bischof put through his own net to tee up a nervy finish.
Less than two minutes had gone when the game was paused due to red smoke billowing out from a pyrotechnic and drifting across the pitch, and that interruption seemed to stop either team from building any momentum.
But Bayern broke the deadlock through an unlikely source in the 16th minute. Upamecano turned defence into attack in an instant when he blocked Niklas Beste's shot, skipped between two challenges and found Harry Kane.
The Ballon d'Or candidate quickly moved the ball onto Olise, who played Upamecano clean through on goal, and he finished like a striker through the legs of Mio Backhaus.
Backhaus made a good stop to thwart Nathaniel Brown as Bayern hunted a second goal, but he had to pick the ball out of his net again in the 42nd minute, with Gnabry following Upamecano's lead by slotting through the goalkeeper's legs.
Backhaus kept Freiburg in the contest for much of the second half, making two saves to thwart substitute Ismael Saibari and one to keep out Kane, and Bayern's position was under threat when Bischof scored an own goal in the 82nd minute.
Freiburg's one clear chance to equalise fell the way of substitute Cyriaque Irie, but Jonas Urbig came up with the save.
And, after the offside flag denied Sacha Boey, Olise profited from Backhaus missing two attempts to clear outside his area, sliding his finish into an empty net to make the points safe in stoppage time.
Gnabry brings up century, Upamecano channels inner Kane
Until Kompany's health scare, much of the focus ahead of this game was on Kane, who will discover on Monday whether he has become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
But the Bavarian giants have plenty of other sources of goals – not least Gnabry. The winger's goal was his 100th in the Bundesliga, on his 267th appearance in the competition.
He is only the third player still active in the league to reach that mark, after Hoffenheim's Andrej Kramaric (141) and Gnabry's team-mate Kane (102).
But Upamecano stole the headlines with what was his 11th Bundesliga goal in 245 appearances, and surely the first that saw him start a move inside his own area, run the length of the pitch, then finish one-v-one with an opposing goalkeeper.
Bayern, who had 17 shots and 2.94 expected goals, compared to Freiburg's 0.99 xG from 17 attempts of their own, are back at the summit on goal difference ahead of facing Dortmund in the first Klassiker of the season next week.
