Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Werder Bremen: Fullkrug ends hosts' perfect Bundesliga start

  • Borussia Dortmund scored two goals in five minutes late on, but Werder Bremen launched a comeback in the dying stages to earn a draw.

Niclas Fullkrug's stoppage-time goal put an end to Borussia Dortmund's 100% Bundesliga start as he salvaged a 2-2 draw for Werder Bremen.

Daniel Svensson and Nico Schlotterbeck scored two quickfire goals to put Dortmund in control, but Ludovit Reis and Fullkrug struck even later to earn a point.

Both sides made a slow start to the game, with Reis having the first clear-cut chance of the first half when he drilled narrowly wide just after the half-hour mark.

Marcel Sabitzer then flashed a free-kick past the post before Maximilian Beier forced a smart sprawling stop out of Karl Hein from a tight angle on the right of the box.

Ethan Nwaneri also called Hein into action just after the break, while Fullkrug volleyed a bouncing clearance from the goalkeeper against Gregor Kobel's outstretched leg.

Dortmund continued to up the pressure, though, and Serhou Guirassy saw a glancing header cleared off the line before Nwaneri's overhead kick thundered in off the near post, but it was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

The hosts eventually got the breakthrough in the 80th minute; a lightning-quick counter-attack saw Guirassy skip down the right before pulling it back into the box and Fabio Silva helped it onto Svensson, who rifled it into the roof of the net first time.

Five minutes later, Dortmund had doubled their lead, with Schlotterbeck nodding a towering header past Hein, who claimed he was being impeded, but the goal survived a VAR check.

However, Dortmund's deficit was halved just three minutes later after Oskar Wojcik intercepted a loose pass and Reis weaved into the box before firing past Kobel.

And in the second minute of stoppage time, Fullkrug got the decisive goal. He timed his run perfectly on a Marco Grull free-kick and flicked his header over Kobel to settle the game.

Dortmund's late collapse opens door in Bundesliga

It has been an impressive start to the 2026-27 season by Dortmund, who remain unbeaten and top of the Bundesliga, but these two dropped points will feel like a loss to Niko Kovac.

The game was a slow burn, with few chances to shout about in the first half, but it sparked to life after the break.

Of Dortmund's 21 shots, 16 came after the break, with Werder firing nine at the hosts' goal in that same time (11 in total). Kovac's side accumulated 2.42 expected goals (xG) overall, with their opponents over-performing their 1.13 xG.

Schlotterbeck eventually got his goal and led the team's attack, having a joint-game-high four shots (level with Sabitzer) and the second-most final-third entries (23 behind Waldemar Anton's 31).

But it was a former Black and Yellow player who came back to haunt the team. Fullkrug has scored in four consecutive Bundesliga matches for the first time in his career, taking his tally to five goals since his return to Werder.

Dortmund are now three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table ahead of the rest of the weekend's action, opening the door for Bayern Munich to close the gap on Saturday.
