Bayern Munich can live without invincible season, Kompany insists
Bayern Munich's hopes of completing a Bundesliga season unbeaten are over, though head coach Vincent Kompany is not too concerned.
Vincent Kompany insisted he can "live without an invincible season", after Augsburg inflicted a first Bundesliga defeat of the campaign upon Bayern Munich.
The runaway Bundesliga leaders were beaten for the first time in the league this term, as their opponents came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.
Hiroki Ito gave Bayern the lead midway through the first half, but were ultimately left empty-handed after Arthur Chaves and Han-Noah Massengo completed the visitors' turnaround in the final quarter of an hour.
Kompany's side can no longer match Bayer Leverkusen's achievement from two years ago, when Xabi Alonso's team went the entire Bundesliga season without defeat.
While it does not cause Kompany much concern, the Bayern head coach demanded a "reaction" from his players.
"This result is for the people who always knew that the Bundesliga is not easy, and that every game is risky," he said.
"We were stable in the first half, without a lot of creativity. It was a game where you say: 'Okay, we played five games in 13 days β maybe, we'll get a result today without a spectacular performance'.
"I'm more disappointed with the result than with the performance. We were in a good position, and we gave it away. We couldn't bring the same energy as in the past games in the second half. It's part of football. Now it's about showing a reaction.
"We shouldn't look for excuses. We should fight as we always did and get results, despite the situation. If we go another 10 months unbeaten, then everything's fine for me.
"I want to achieve a lot with this club and in my career as a coach, but for me personally, this would be an achievement for the boys. I just want to support them. I can live without this invincible season if we continue to win titles and be successful."
It was Bayern's first league defeat since March, ending a 27-match unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga.
Harry Kane felt a lack of energy was a deciding factor, though, like Kompany, the striker is focused on learning from the result, rather than dwelling on not going the entire campaign without loss.
"I don't think it was ever even mentioned, especially not from the coach," Kane added. "Our aim is to win the Bundesliga title. Of course, I know there's sometimes talk around that when you go a certain period of time without losing.
"But as we saw today, if you're not quite on it, if you're not quite 100%, you can be punished no matter who you play, whether you're home or away. It should be a learning curve for us.
"Our first half was okay. I think we deserved the lead, and we also had moments where we could have actually decided the game. Our final touch wasn't quite clean, the final pass was lacking, and their goalkeeper made some good saves.
"At 1-0, the game is always open, no matter who you're playing against; you can be punished for it. In the second half, we lacked a bit of energy; we weren't as fluid with the ball.
"Respect to our opponents: they put on more pressure and made it difficult for us. It's been a tough stretch with a lot of games, but ultimately, things move quickly, and we're now focusing on the Champions League."
